Mun2 Series Links Young Latinos With Role Models
BY LAURA MARTÍNEZ

NBC-owned Mun2 is giving young Latinos a chance to hook up with top Latino professionals in the industry of their choice. A new reality weekly series, The Mun2 Hook Up, premiered July 30 on the bilingual youth channel by hooking up a young, varsity football player in the Los Angeles area with NFL star Tony González. The idea of the show is simple: to give young viewers the opportunity to speak directly to their role models and receive valuable advice and tips in their respective professions.
A second episode, to air August 6, features Mexican designer Sami Hayek, who walks a young student through the creative process of designing things and objects in his own Los Angeles studio. Viewers will be able to follow the young designer, Fu Paullada, as he arrives at Hayek’s studio and is presented with a series of professional challenges, including the design of a soccer stadium.
“The idea was to come up with concepts that really reflect what our audiences want,” says Mun2 general manager Alex Pels. “The show gives them an opportunity to speak directly to their role models.
In anticipation of the on-air premiere, viewers were encouraged to visit holamun2.com/hookup where they were able to watch the complete first episode online one day prior to the on-air premiere. New Reality Series: The Mun2 Hook Up” by Nalipster Director/Writer Team Ernesto Quintero and Diana M. Perez Getting Top Ratings for it’s Premiere Episode.
Ernesto Quintero (Higher Ground Entertainment), director/executive producer and Dianna M. Perez, writer of The Mun2 Hook Up first met in 1999 at the first NALIP conference in San Francisco, CA. The two shared a vision of creating projects that inspired and create social change. “The Mun2 Hook Up”, which helps young people get ‘hooked up” with top professionals fits perfectly with this vision and after competing with 38 other production companies, Higher Ground won the bid to produce the 13 episode series with Quintero attached as director/executive producer and Perez slated as the writer/co-producer.
Along with sharing similar visions, Quintero and Perez have similar stories; they are self-taught. “I wasn’t going to wait for the big budgets”, says Quintero, “ I felt there were stories I could tell with the limited equipment I had”. So he used a pro-summer camera, taught himself final cut pro and learned how to tell stories in that medium. Now, Quintero has written, directed and produced a number of award-winning commercials, short films, and documentaries. Similarly, instead of waiting for someone else to buy her script, Perez independently produced and directed her first feature film, “Students Like Us” which Quintero edited and co-produced. The film is currently in post-production and is slated to do the festival circuit in 2009. “If you have a fire in your belly to express yourself, nothing should stop you
“, says Perez.
As to the “Mun2 Hook Up”, Quintero attributes his early years of run-and–gun filmmaking for preparing him most to direct reality T.V. For even the most experienced, shooting the majority of a 23-minute episode in just several hours would be a challenge. Well, those early years of training have paid off because “The Mun2 Hook Up” featuring Kansas City Chiefs tight end and future Hall-of-Famer Tony Gonzalez, received top ratings. Although it’s too early to tell if viewers will stayed tuned, 30,000 viewers tuned in for it’s premiere making “ The Mun2 Hook Up “ the networks second highest rated show for the week.
Quintero has always felt that a big budget project will eventually come. “In the meantime money can’t buy creativity. It’s in the ‘doing’ that we learn to call it, harness and produce it, “says Quintero. “The writer/director process in reality television is different than other formats. Together we are crafting the story before it is shot and all through post. Collaborating is about trust, respect and also not being afraid to fight for your vision,” says Perez “And collaborating with Ernie is an honor because I have the utmost respect for his work and we share this mission to create positive change. And how much more positive can you get than ‘The Mun2 Hook Up’?”
Quintero and Perez welcome Nalipsters to log onto www.holamun2.com/hookup to view the episodes and share their thoughts on the show.

ALMA Awards – Ernesto Quintero, Warrior of the Set
The nominations for the Alma awards were announced and of the four nominations in the Outstanding Made-for–TV Documentary Category “Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court and “Lalo Guerrero: The Original Chicano” have more than the obvious in common. They are both about incredible American role models, they both exemplify excellence in documentary filmmaking, and they both hold Ernesto Quintero in common. Quintero a director, editor and producer from Lincoln Heights will celebrate if either film takes home the ALMA because he was involved in both. However, the odd thing is that this self-taught multi-talented filmmaker had completely different roles in each. Quintero produced and edited “Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court”; a film whose versatile appeal is best exemplified by it’s airing on both Spike TV and PBS; two networks whose mission statements for content are practically polar opposites of each other. Also note that Gonzalez surpassed rating records for any documentary to air on Spike TV in 2006. For the “Lalo Guerrero: The Original Chicano” documentary Quintero wore his director and DP (Director of Photography) hat. With the challenge of choosing a director for the introduction of the Guerrero documentary who would in two minutes infuse the audience with the vibrancy, warmth and cool of the
many decades graced by Guerrero’s music, producer Nancy de los Santos (Selena)turned to Quintero.
Of being involved in two of the nominated projects, Quintero says, “To be part of two projects that are about two Chicanos who were the greatest at what they do doesn't get any better for me. Both are huge talents who over their lifelong careers had to fight for their platforms and both have inspired me”. “However”, Quintero adds, “Telling the story of the greatest tennis player of all time has had its impact on me. As producer and editor, I approach my work with the same intensity Richard approached his game.”
Like Gonzalez, Quintero is a homegrown Angelino. He was born and raised in the close-knit Latino neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. Lincoln Heights is just 7 miles Southeast of Hollywood but worlds away. Growing up in the soup of this dichotomy and in such proximity of the epicenter of the most influential medium in the world has created a voracious brew within Quintero. “All I want to do is tell stories and tell the best ones possible, the ones that matter, the ones that will inspire a kid to drop his gun and pick up the camera.” As a matter of fact, Quintero’s story is not so unlike the story of this self-taught tennis player who with nothing but his own conviction grew to be the greatest in his sport. Quintero, a self-taught filmmaker, who after garnering two marks at the Smithsonian from theatre (The Last Angry Brown Hat, Veteranos) could be headed to do similarly within the film medium.
Quintero is currently editing a feature film, “Students Like Us” of which he is also a producer. His production company, Higher Ground Entertainment is working with Hollywood producer David Valdes (Green Mile, Unforgiven) to turn Richard Gonzalez’s story into a feature film. Next, Quintero will put the Writer/Director hat on with his feature film about two brothers which will star his real life brother Officer Rick Quintero of Fox’s “Good Day LA”.

Higher Ground Entertainment receives a nomination for the 2007 ALMA Awards for“Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court,” in the category of “Outstanding Made for TV Documentary.”
Los Angeles, California, Nominations for the 2007 ALMA Awards were announced and included in the list of prestigious nominees is Higher Ground Entertainment, a local production company dedicated to develping television and film projects that offer socially relevant, informational and entertaining stories that reflect historical and present-day reality of the Latino experience. Executive Producer, Danny Haro states, “our stories in both film and television explore the Latino contributions in American society in an effort to supplement traditional history.”
Founded in 2003, Higher Ground Entertainment’s partners have more than 30 years of entertainment experience between them having received numerous awards for their projects. “Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court” is their first project as an independent collective entity.
Narrated by Benjamin Bratt, Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of The Court tells the compelling story of Richard Alonzo "Pancho" Gonzalez, largely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Sports Illustrated(SI) named Pancho Gonzalez one of the top 20 favorite athletes of the 20th Century. SI said of Pancho, “He could have been the Marlon Brando of tennis…” “If earth was on the line in a tennis match, the man you want serving to save humankind would be Ricardo Alonzo Gonzalez.” He was haughty, overbearing and egotistical, but he was also seductive, charming and had the talent to pull it off. What he did not have was the proper surname and bloodlines in a game which till only recently resembled a feudal system.
Although known throughout the tennis world, Gonzalez played in relative obscurity during his ten-year reign as the World's Professional Champion because until 1968, only amateurs were permitted to play the established Grand Slam tournaments. A year later, and already a grandfather, he played one of Wimbledon's longest matches against Charlie Pasarell; the match lasted for 112 games, more than 5 hours, consuming 2 days. Gonzalez was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1968 while still an active player. He never had a formal tennis lesson, yet ruled his sport during the fifties and early sixties and continued to compete past the age of forty defeating players half his age, including Jimmy Connors, Rod Laver, and Arthur Ashe.
“This great champion deserves to be on the same level of recognition as any of our nation’s sports’ icons. From Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Micky Mantle, to Muhammed Ali and Arthur Ashe, Pancho’s story represents the American tale of overcoming significant obstacles yet succeeding to become one of the greatest ever in his sport,” said the film’s director, Danny Haro. “Our hope is that
this story will instill a sense of remembrance and appreciation for the legacy Pancho and other Latinos have left in American Sports History.”
Featuring interviews with Robert Redford, Serena and Venus Williams, Edward James Olmos, and Jimmy Connors as well as exclusive footage never before seen, the film tells the story of one of the great unrecognized super star American athletes.
Danny Haro, Director and Executive Producer holds a B.A. from Boston University in History/Latin American studies and a Law Degree from Antioch School of Law in Washington D.C. He was the Executive Prodcuer of two award-winning plays, The Last Angry Brown Hat and Veteranos: A Legacy of Valor. His Director credit includes A Witness for the Prosecution funded by the City of Los Angeles’ District Attoryney’s Office and is currently being used in the California court systems. His producer credits include Lives in Hazard for NBC, and It Ain’t Love, which aired on CINEMAX.
Ernesto Quintero is a self-taught multitalented filmmaker who wears many hats. He functions in a creative capacity, and handles all aspects of business and production. Quintero strongly believes in projects of human importance and is an advocate for using video & film for social change.
Nick Athas began his motion picture career as Associate Producer and Marketing Director for the high touted films Dominick and Eugene, The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Triumph of the Spirit, and American Me. Mr. Athas has written extensively on film and social issues. He was the producer of the documentary feature films, Lives In Hazard, It Ain’t Love and Americanos: Latino Life in the United States, which premiered on NBC and HBO. He also directed the educational campaigns for these films, which reached thousands of young people with a message of tolerance and hope.
Current company projects include: “The Pawns of Brownsville,” an uplifting story of Latino children overcoming all odds through the game of chess; “Courting A Warrior,” the feature film version of the Life and Times of tennis great, Pancho Gonzalez; “In the Right Corner,” a documentary on one of the most successful trainers in the history of boxing, Freddie Roach; “The Ultimate Warrior,”
the story of one of the fastest rising stars within the UFC, Diego “the Nightmare” Sanchez; and “Joe Kapp, All American,” insight into the “winningest” quarterback in football history, Chicano, Joe Kapp. Currently in pre-development, “Reaching for Harmony” will be a four-part series for PBS on the history of race relations between African-Americans and Latinos. This will be a collaborative effort between Latino Public Broadcasting and The Black Filmmakers’ Consortium.
