| Approximately sixteen years ago, Brownsville Texas elementary school teacher J.J. Guajardo, in a last ditch effort to “reach” his class of second and third graders, labeled by the school Principal as “Trouble Makers,” took the unusual step of introducing the game of chess to the students. What came next was totally unexpected. Neither Mr. Guajardo, nor anyone in the school or the entire city of Brownsville, could foresee how introducing this game would literally create a chain of life-changing events for not only his individual students, but students in schools across South Texas and the entire state of Texas. Ever since that day, the second poorest city/county in the United States has been consistently ranked in the top five percent of chess cities in the nation! |
